'Tis the season to be school shopping. In San Diego there are many options to sort out. According the www.sandi.net our options are below:
These are schools offering various specialities. They each operate independently. Each school has different enrollment guidelines. It is important to note that the enrollment due dates vary school to school. For more information visit www.sandi.net/charterschools
When people refer to "choicing in" this is what they are talking about. With the exception of magnet schools, students may choice into schools outside of their neighborhood. The slots are limited. Transportation to the school is not provided. For more information visit: www.sandi.nete/oea
These schools offer various specialities like the charter schools. They take is up a notch by be specialized to a higher degree. Some schools specialize in languages, math, engineering, etc. Think of the Fame School. Think of the TV show Glee. These are specialized educational opportunities. Transportation to the school is usually the student's responsibility.
This the school that you drive by on the way to the grocery store. This is the school that you pass while walking the dog. San Diego encourages residents to send their students to their local schools. This is big push lately. Given that almost 1 in 2 students does not attend their local school, San Diego has taken an interest in making the local school more appealing. Proof of location residency is necessary to attend the neighborhood school. I like the idea of having the kids live close to their classmates. It makes play dates and birthday parties easier. It also reduces on commuting and fossil fuel consumption. Pride in the neighborhood is driven home by the local school. Visit www.sandi.net/schoolfinder for details.
Take a tour of several schools. Try a sample of all of the options. Talk with the teachers in your proposed grades, check out the office staff and meet the Principal. Listen to your gut. It will tell you which school or schools fit the needs and goals of your family. Send out applications in accordance with each schools guidelines. The San Diego applications are due February 15, 2015. Visit www.sandi.net/apply
