Multi Generational Housing Is Back In Style

Multi Generational Housing Is Back In Style

Several generations under one roof are back in style.  Approximately 57% of American households incorporate a member of the Baby Boomer generation.  Some of these people are aging parents.   Some are grown children that return to the household to save money on housing.
In San Diego Buyers are looking for "in laws".  This is the local term for multi-generational housing.

The housing is not necessarily for Grandma it may have a variety of occupants.
This growing niche is an opportunity for property owners that are considering a renovation.  While modifying your home consider future needs and the out look of current Buyers.  Here are a few suggestions to make your renovation appropriate for your expanded family and an opportunity to cash in on when the property is sold.

1.  Have a large master suite with a siting area on the first floor.  Include an en suite rest room with a shower a wheelchair may be rolled into.

2.  Create a apartment on the property that is up to code and may be leased or used by a relative.

3.  Install hard surface floors.   Avoid carpet that may be difficult for wheelchairs and walkers.

4.  Build a master suite upstairs for the younger generation.  Include a private retreat area.

5.  Create a large open living area that all generations may enjoy together.Planning ahead for aging and the growth of your family and the changing real estate market is wise.

Strategize with your Realtor before the plans are created.
