Does My Home Improvement Require A Permit

Does My Home Improvement Require A Permit

Homeowners are aware of the need for home improvement permits.  The specifics vary depending upon location.  Most home owners engage with licensed Contractors and Architects that follow the rules in place.
Having licensed permitted work done is particularly important when it comes time to sell the property.  Unpermitted work can bite a Seller in the ass.  Buyers want to be assured that the work on the property is safe and the construction followed the municipal guidelines.

The small projects are where most homeowners getting into trouble.  Some areas require permits for cosmetic interior projects that may not seem huge to a homeowner. Small projects such as installing a new window or sliding glass door may require permits.  The Do It Yourself homeowner must be aware of the rules in their state and local area.

In Clairemont it is common to add a second bathroom to small homes.  The bathroom usually takes the place of the master closet.  Installing a shower frequently requires a permit.  Plumbing of any kind usually does.  Several of the homes in 92110 and 92117 have unpermitted bathrooms.  This is a challenge at the time of sale.

Many homes in Clairemont also have unpermitted additions attached to the back of the house.  These are commonly referred to as "the box on the back".   One landlord described an addition on his rental property as "casual".

Casual works for clothes not homes.
