Buy Less Buy Nothing Project

Buy Less Buy Nothing Project

On the floor of my closet I have a shopping bag.  Every time something doesn't fit just right or is looking sad, I have the luxury of being able to donate it.  When the bag fills up it moves to the truck of my car.  Whenever a donation spot is convenient the bag is dropped off.  It may be at a non-profit or a friends' home.

My kids are constantly out growing not only their clothes but also their toys.  We do the same thing in the their closets.  The items that they do have a use for are passed down to someone younger that will enjoy them.  It amazes me how quickly they move from tricycles to mountain bikes and burn through shoes.

Another donation opportunity is available to us online.  It is the Buy Nothing Project.  The concept is that if we don't have an audience for the extra stuff that we have we may create it online.  The project is locally based.  Instead of buy locally it is give locally.  Another benefit is that you are reusing items within your own neighborhood.  That avoids extra driving.  Most items are left outside of the person's house and someone comes to pick it up.  There is no disruption.

Last month my kids received a backpack, a bowling ball and lots of school supplies through this service.   We also gave away a chair, a tarp and a large playhouse.  In addition to meeting nice people I didn't have to disassemble anything and schlep it someplace.  The new owners came to me.

What are you done with that someone else would groove on?  In the end meeting people, saving money and minimizing clutter are big wins.
